The Three Lokas and 14 Bhuvanas

Introduction to Vedic Cosmology

Vedic Cosmology is an ancient Indian belief system that describes the creation, existence, and destruction of the universe. It is an integral part of Hinduism and is described in Hindu scriptures such as the Vedas, Puranas, and Upanishads.

The Three Lokas

In Vedic Cosmology, the universe is divided into three main realms or lokas:

  • Swarga Loka (Heavenly realm)
  • Bhu Loka (Earthly realm)
  • Patala Loka (Underworld)

Each of these lokas has its own unique characteristics and is inhabited by different types of beings. Swarga Loka is considered the most desirable and is inhabited by gods, demigods, and other divine beings. Bhu Loka is the realm of human beings, while Patala Loka is inhabited by demons and other lower beings.

The 14 Bhuvanas

The Bhu Loka is further divided into 14 different bhuvanas or realms. These 14 realms are as follows:

  • Bhur (Physical Earth)
  • Bhuvar (Atmosphere)
  • Swarga (Heaven)

  • Mahar (Great)
  • Jana (People)
  • Tapa (Austerity)

  • Satya (Truth)

  • Atala (Stability)
  • Vitala (Energy)
  • Sutala (Sustenance)

  • Talatala (Illusions)
  • Rasatala (Temptation)
  • Mahatala (Darkness)

  • Patala (Underworld)

Each of these realms has its own unique characteristics and is inhabited by different beings. For example, the Bhur realm is inhabited by human beings and other physical beings, while the Swarga realm is inhabited by gods and other divine beings.
